ABC Desert Tour 2022

Saturday, 12 March

(with optional overnight stay)

This year we will be visiting the desert near Al Madam, where we will explore the ‘Super Bowl’ with a dune height of approx. 25 m, located 6 km WSW of Al Madam at 24°52,90′ N   55°43,66′ E. At this dune formation, an air vortex has blown out the red dune sand down to the original stable ground. The “Super Bowl” hole is 33 m deep, which is the height of a 9-story building. After some sand cruising, we will set up our camp and spend the rest of the afternoon and evening in the sand at a cozy campfire. Overnight stay at Fao Dunes is optional. Knowledgeable guides for each part of the tour available.

The details of the ABC desert tour are as follows:

TIME & PROGRAM

1:00 PM         
Meeting point:  Emarat petrol station. Google maps  link: https://goo.gl/maps/3dBwVTXyZxkeXSNFA ( N25°02’05” E55°35’37” )

All participants should come to the meeting point already fully prepared, i.e. full tank and full lunch boxes. Together we will drive to the tire deflation point.

We should meet at the petrol station at 1:00 PM with a driving time from Dubai of about 1 h 15 min and from Abu Dhabi of about 2 h 30 min.
How to get to the meeting point (Emarat petrol station)?
For participants from Dubai: Take the Dubai Hatta Oman Road and proceed to Lahbab roundabout.

For participants from Abu Dhabi: On Sheikh Zayed Rd ,with  Jebel Ali Port Free Zone  on your left,  turn right into Expo Road and continue on the same Road to Lahbab R/A.

All participants: From Lahbab R/A continue on Dubai Hatta Oman Rd towards Hatta.

At 18,4 km from Lahbab R/A one comes to the first buildings/shops of Madam and there at 24°56,29′ N  55°44,46 turn off the fast lanes into the Service Road, proceed on the Service Road 1000 m and just after a Pedestrian Bridge at 24°55,96’N  55°44.93′ turn 90° right onto an asphalt road and drive 2,5 km SE to our assembly and  tire deflation point.

At the tire deflation point, we will deflate the tires and give some driving tips. Please note that there are no facilities from there until we get back to Al Madam or Shuwaib next day.

Departure to Super Bowl from tire deflation point

From there we plan to drive about 5 km to the Super Bowl. This is the difficult part of the drive as the dunes are quite high and the way goes up and down.

The Super Bowl party will proceed 14 km through the dunes, partly along the Al Maha resort fence towards the Settlement of Al Owaid and to the common final destination in the Al Fao Dunes 1 km from the Al Owaid settlement, which we expect to reach before sun set.

Setting up the camp and BBQ. We will then consume our well-deserved sundowners and whatever we have brought along to be grilled, fried or cooked.

Those who do not want to spend the night in the desert can return via Al Owaid to Al Madam and back to Dubai or to Al Owaid and Shuwaib and then via Sweihan to Abu Dhabi.

On Sunday, March 13 we can try to explore the way along the Al Maha fence out to the Dubai Al Ain road from where we can again split up into a Dubai and an Abu Dhabi via Sweihan party.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Car
We will all start on an exploratory 4×4 drive towards the Super Bowl and if it proves to be too difficult for some participants we will split the group and take those who opt for an easier way back to Al Madam and from there to our final destination in the Al Fao Dunes near the settlement of Al Owaid on the Madam Shuwaib Road.

Food & Beverages
Please make sure to bring sufficient water, beverages and food for your own consumption and of course also to share, if you like.

Equipment
Please bring BBQ equipment, charcoal, wood for the campfire, camping chairs and table, garbage bags, insect repellent, sunscreen, sunshade particularly for smaller kids, and warm clothes.
If overnight stay is planned, a tent, mats or an inflatable mattress, cushion and blankets or sleeping bags, flashlights and, spare batteries come handy.
