Our event on Nov 1st about important aspects of the Austrian income tax and social security system for Austrian expats was a big success. We had 54 attendees!
The evening started off with a presentation by our legal counsel Dr. Clemens Daburon. He focused his deliberations on the new UAE Commercial company law and amendments to the European inheritance law which can have some serious effect on us expats in the UAE if no proper will has been set up. Specifically Dr. Daburon warned about the dangers of the UAE cyber crime law, which is in force already since 2012, but which is increasingly applied by the authorities even in cases of “defamation” in emails. The danger of the cyber crime law lies in the draconian penalties that it stipulates (fines of between AED 250.000 – 10 mio. imprisonment of between 6 months – 10 years and the mandatory deportation of foreigners!!!)
The guest speaker of the evening was MMag. Klaus Krammer of TPA Horwath Austria, a tax advisory, accounting & auditing firm. Mr. Krammer is a specialist for Austrian taxes and social security. We would like to thank Crowe Horwath, especially the local partner Mag. (FH) Markus Susilo, for sponsoring Mr. Krammers flight and accommodation expenses enabling us to organize this very interesting information evening.
That is a very nice example how ABC members can support and sponsor the Austrian Business Council!
The most important take-away from Mr. Krammers presentation is that the double-taxation treaty between the UAE and Austria is very beneficial for us and puts us, who live in the UAE, in a much better position in comparison to our compatriots in Qatar. The content of the presentation was so rich that it would be impossible to provide a short summary in this document.
