Austrian Roots of a Modern Dubai – A trip back through time at Dubai Creek

March 13, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

We are delighted to invite you to another exciting trip back through time to discover how Austrians helped realizing Sheikh Rashid bin Said al Maktoum’s dreams of a modern Dubai.
This time our guide will be Mr. Norbert Hartlieb. Born in 1950 in Carinthia, he joined the apprentice school of the Heraklith Works in Ferndorf and worked in the Magnesite Mine in Radenthein as a specialist fitter. In 1977 he joined the construction company of Edmund Ast in Graz who sent him to their branch Overseas Ast in Dubai. Joined in the same year by his wife Anni and his one and a half year old son Martin he built up and managed steel fabrication and marine work units for Overseas Ast and subsequently for Waagner Biro Gulf where he is still active as a consultant and technical advisor to this day.
Mr. Hartlieb will regale us with stories of the past and the significant role Austrians played in making Dubai and the surrounding region what it is today. This includes not just AST and Waagner Biro but also more pioneering Austrians, firms and organizations like Shaikh Rashid’s Austrian Helicopter Squad, the Dubai Zoo and others.
